Leaf Pick Up

The Village of Lansing, Public Works Department will begin leaf pick up on October 31st and will continue through December 2nd. Leaves will be picked up on the same day as your garbage and recycling. Please do not put leaves in cans, paper bags or plastic bags. All leaves must be raked to the parkway as close to the curb as possible. Please do not put the leaves in the street because this will cause street flooding. If you have put your leaves in cans or bags, you will have to dump them out on the day of your scheduled pick up.

The leaf pick up program will continue until all the leaves are picked up, so if you are missed for any reason, be assured that we will be back the following week.

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM PARKING CARS IN FRONT OF LEAVES ON YOUR PICK UP DAY. IF THE LEAF VAC CANNOT GET TO YOUR LEAVES, THEY WILL NOT BE PICKED UP UNTIL THE FOLLOWING WEEK, WEATHER PERMITTING.

**NOTE** There may be occasions when leaves will not be picked up due to inclement weather. Please be patient and the Public Works Department will do the best they can to get all leaves picked up when weather permits.

Garbage/Yard Waste Pick Up

If you have any grass clippings during the month of November, it should be dumped on the parkway with your leaves and it will be picked up by the leaf vac.

Yard waste pick up will begin Monday, April 4th and end October 28th, it will be on your regularly scheduled garbage day. Residents are reminded that it is illegal in Illinois to mix yard waste with garbage, so please keep it separate. Also as a reminder, yard waste must be in paper bags or garbage cans that are 32 gallons or less. No yard waste will be picked up in plastic bags. You must call Public Works to schedule pick ups for large amounts of branches and they must be bundled together. Branches are picked up by the chipper truck daily.

There are only 6 major holidays that Homewood Disposal does not pick up garbage; New Years Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  If your garbage day falls on one of these major holidays, your pick up will be delayed one day for that week. All pick ups will also be delayed one day for the remainder of that week, and Friday pick ups will be done on Saturday.  This applies to garbage and recycling only. Yard waste will only be delayed one day for residents whose pick up day falls directly on the holiday. Please call the Public Works Department if you have any questions.

One exception this year, Good Friday, yard waste pick ups will be done the following Monday. Garbage and recycling will be picked up on Good Friday.

Sump Pumps

Dear Residents,

The Village of Lansing needs your help.

As you know the spring and summer rains now seem to arrive in inches, causing street flooding, and more importantly basement flooding. While the Village of Lansing does have some combined areas {storm and sanitary go to the same pipes} 85% of our town is separated. This means storm water and sanitary waste do not meet. Storm water in the street goes to a different pipe than sanitary waste water does.

So how does my basement flood?    The answer is:    SUMP PUMPS.

Illinois State law requires ALL sump lines to discharge to the rear of property and not into the sanitary sewer. What happens during a rain event is that so many sump pumps are illegally hooked to the sanitary sewer which increases the flow rate by 10,000 gallons per minute, thus causing too much rain water in the sanitary system that is not designed for such high volume. Our pumps and pipes become full with no where for this excess to go, and that is when our neighbors’ basements flood. Disconnecting the sump lines will alleviate this problem, while our yards and streets might still hold water, basements will remain dry.

If you think your line is hooked up to the sanitary and would like us to come take a look, call Public Works, and we will dispatch a crew to guide you through proper installation.

Please next time you see carpet or furniture out in the parkway after a heavy rain, don’t wonder if you helped to contribute to your neighbors’ misfortune, elect to disconnect.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Ron Bannon
Superintendent

Yard Waste

The Village of Lansing has been informed by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency that we can no longer co-mingle garbage and yard waste together. We have started a separate grass collection program. Your yard waste will still be picked up on your regular garbage day. You will need to have grass clippings in either a brown PAPER bag or a can no larger than 32 gallons. Please have this receptacle labeled YARD WASTE or GRASS. Absolutely NO plastic bags will be collected. Landfill compost sites will not accept plastic of any kind.

OTHER OPTIONS:

1) Leave grass clippings and leaves on the lawn as nutrients.
2) Mulch grass clippings, leaves and wood chips for garden and lawn applications.
3) Construct an on-site well maintained household compost bin. Use the compost as a soil nutrient.

Thank you for your cooperation on this eco-friendly program. If you have any questions, please call Public Works at 708-895-7190 between 7am and 3pm.

Please Remember

The Village Ordinance for garbage containers states that 32 gallon plastic 32 gal Garbage Canor galvanized cans with handles and lids must be used for garbage pick up.

Please purchase the proper size garbage can so that we can provide garbage pick up for you without injury to our employees.
