| Kingery Reconstruction Project |
THE NEED:
The Kingery Expressway no
longer meets current engineering standards and is in need of major
reconstruction. The expressway is more than 50 years old and has surpassed its
original design by more than 30 years. Since it opened, the average daily
traffic has multiplied to seven times what the expressway was originally built
to handle. The Kingery is currently utilized by approximately 160,000 vehicles
each day, with more than a quarter of all traffic being large trucks. The
average daily traffic count is projected to grow to 192,000 vehicles per day by
2020.
PROJECT:
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is reconstructing the
Kingery Expressway to improve public safety, traffic mobility and road
conditions. The project stretches 6.6 miles including adding an expressway lane
in each direction, resurfacing, bridge work and local access road improvements.

CURRENT CONDITIONS:
The Robert Kingery Expressway, originally constructed in 1950, no longer meets current engineering standards and is in need of major reconstruction. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans to address the following expressway issues for motorists:
PROJECT SPECIFICS:
The $300 million project will improve highway safety, mobility, configuration and road conditions. Improvements along the 6.6 miles of expressway, which carries an average of 160,000 vehicles a day, include:
TIMELINE:
2004
Minimal to no impact to motorists as IDOT engages in advance work to
temporarily expand the shoulder to accommodate traffic, frontage road
reconstruction, bridgework over the expressway and other similar projects.
All work will be completed in preparation for mainline construction in
2005-2006.
2005
Motorists can expect heavier delays as the project moves forward. Mainline
road reconstruction will result in an additional outside lane in both
directions. Other work includes bridge replacement, frontage road
reconstruction, interchange reconstruction, traffic signals, local road
reconstruction, retaining walls and lighting instillation.
2006
Motorists should expect heavy delays. Mainline road reconstruction will be
focused on the inside lanes in both directions.
2007
Expressway, road and bridge work will be complete. Motorists can expect
minimal to no impact on their commute time as IDOT is focusing on
landscaping and beautification to the project area.
